How to Optimize Old Blog Content

Update titles to make them more SEO-friendly.

SEO stands for “search engine optimization” and is the process of getting traffic to your site from search engines. We could talk about SEO all day, but if you update your blog post title to include keywords that Google likes, you will get higher priority on search engine results. There are plenty of websites out there that can help you research what keywords are best!

Update the formatting to improve readability.

By making your post easier on the eyes, people are more likely to stay on your site. Break up longer sections of text into smaller, bite-sized paragraphs. Utilize headings and try bolding important information. Use lists. Make sure that everything is visually top-notch.

Update any timely content and make it evergreen.

Or delete those posts altogether if they aren’t relevant anymore! There’s no shame in that. You don’t want your customers wading through posts about your new puppy or an outfit from 2013 if you want to be serious about your biz. Check all links to make sure they aren’t broken.

If you’re optimizing a post from years ago, chances are the links you provided have a new home on the internet and they’ll need to be updated. We like to use the free website to do this quickly.

BONUS TIP: Speaking of links, you should always be doing what is called “deep linking,” which is when you link to other content of yours within each blog post. This helps your readers find other content they are interested in and keeps them on your site longer. It’s a win-win!

Add new opt-ins.

You probably have created some killer opt-ins since you started blogging that would be relevant in your old content. Get those added to old posts so you can make them do some work for you!

Update graphics to match current branding.

Chances are, you’ve rebranded at least once since starting your blog and biz. Make sure all your graphics reflect that so you are consistent across the board. It’s a good idea to make them Pinterest-friendly too!

Add to your Pinterest schedule and group boards.

Pinterest is an epic visual search engine that can bring your content to the next level by connecting you with your dream audience. Why wouldn’t you want to utilize it?

Share on social media.

6 Things to Do After You Hit Publish

Whew! You just researched and wrote an incredible blog post. You created the gorgeous graphics. You checked your links twice. You did all the things to make your blog post happen. It’s time to relax, put your feet up, and enjoy a piña colada. Right?

Not so fast! Checking off every box on our blog post process checklist is a great start, but there’s more you can (and should!) do after you hit publish that will help your post succeed and be seen by your people (and potential clients).

1. Share your post immediately on social media.

Remember those graphics you created before you hit publish on that post? Put them to good use! Write an Instagram post sharing a little peek of the content of your blog post and then direct your followers to your website to read more. Take to Twitter and use those 280 characters to their best ability. Share that Pinterest-optimized graphic.

BONUS: Don’t say the exact same thing on each social media platform! Tailor the message of each post to fit the vibe of each platform.

By sharing your posts immediately, you’re keeping your readers updated on what’s going on on your website. Don’t feel like you’re annoying them — that’s why they follow you!

2. Schedule your future social media shares.

One reason why you should focus on creating evergreen content is so your posts can be shared anytime and they will still be relevant and useful to your readers.

Share a link on Twitter later in the week and ask your followers if they’ve had a chance to check out your most recent post yet. Schedule another social media share a month from when the post went live to keep directing your followers back to your website.

You can even schedule links that will go live a year from when your content is published! Keep driving that traffic back to your past content and make it work for you.

3. Add your post to your Pinterest board schedule.

Don’t be afraid to show your personality — get a little kooky and don’t worry about messing up. The more “real life” you share, the better!

5. Share your post with your email list.

Chances are, people are signing up for your email list because they aren’t visiting your site on their own every day to see if you’ve posted something new. Give the people what they want and let them in on when you have something new to share with them!

6. Answer your comments.

Nothing turns a reader off more than a blogger who doesn’t take the time to post even a short reply to their comment. Keep the conversation in the comments going and your readers will keep coming back again and again. Remember… people want to buy from people! There are things you can do behind the scenes on your website to make this happen, but one way to get more eyes on what you’re selling is by posting high-quality, SEO-friendly blog posts. By paying attention to SEO, you’re not only going to get more eyes on your website, but you’re going to get the visitors (ahem, potential clients) you want looking at your content.

Here are a few tips to make search engines love your posts:

  • Use keywords. These are words and phrases within your post that make it possible for people to find your website through search engines. You want to write about keywords that your ideal client is searching for and use these keywords throughout each of your posts.

  • Use paragraphs and headings. Search engines love blog posts that are readable, and using headings and paragraphs to break up your writing and help your reader follow along does just that.

  • Optimize your graphics. When you upload graphics to your blog, make sure the file name includes your keyword and that you have changed the alternative text (or “alt-text”) to a description of your post that — you guessed it! — includes your keyword.

  • Link to relevant content throughout. If you mention it, link to it! Not only will that get potential clients clicking around on your website, but this is great for SEO.

BONUS: If you are using WordPress, there are plugins that can help you make sure every post has been optimized! Yoast is a great one.


Potential customers are more likely to become clients if there is a face behind your website. Share the story about why you started your business. Give your readers tips that are based on your real-life experience. Write about why they need the service you provide.

People are more likely to buy from someone if they have a relationship with them and having a blog is a great way to start that relationship.
