What You Should Unlearn to Grow Your Business

We’ve been talking the past couple of weeks about transitioning our marketing and client experience efforts away from the one-size-fits-all blueprints we’ve been sold by online marketing experts. (Catch up on our blog series here!)

For so long, we’ve been told there is only one way to do it. And usually, it is THEIR way or what worked for THEIR business. It’s usually a promise of a quick, easy fix that costs an arm and a leg, and once you get into it, focuses on profits over people.  

We’ve seen THERE IS A BETTER WAY. 

We’ve seen it work for us and for our clients, and we want to see it work for you!

But we, too, are unlearning. As we geared up to launch our new 12-week program Align & Activate, we kept having to switch that old way of thinking off. We actively began unlearning everything we were taught about online marketing and stepped fully into this new mindset:

I don’t have to show up everywhere and be everything to everyone. I just have to align with my strength, passion, and purpose. I just have to be ME. I just have to show up for PEOPLE.

It feels too simple, honestly. 

We kept thinking we were forgetting something! Because for too long we’ve been stuck in the hustle. Doing. Doing! DOING!! Only to see such little result.

If you find yourself objecting to this new mindset (or unable to tune out the old methods), you’re not alone. Here are some counterpoints to the most common objections we faced.

Objection: I don’t have the time to invest in learning or trying something new.

You’re right! You don't have time, because you’re spinning your wheels to be in all the places. You’re doing all the things it takes to make your business run. All the things the “experts” and “business leaders” are telling you to do. All the marketing, social media, and showing up to in-person events. You are doing it all.

But remember, our method is about simplification.

You are already doing so much. I see you. I’ve been you. You are running on a treadmill when you really want to be out on the trail covering actual ground. I’m not going to give you one more thing to add to your list. 

What we have found is that when you align your strength, your purpose, and your passion, you find clarity on where and how you need to be showing up. You are able to speak your message and live out the life that sets your soul on fire. 

So instead of showing up everywhere all the time, find your ONE platform. The one that you love, that you shine on, that comes naturally to you. The one that aligns with your gifts and your deeper purpose. Then, go ALL IN there. 

That’s where you share your core message. That’s where you start the relationship. That’s where you activate your power and begin to see real movement.

I’m not saying you live there forever and never show up anywhere else. But you simplify your efforts to what serves you best right now and allow time to truly connect with the human beings that show up there.

You are not investing in something new; you are going all-in with your strengths, with your passion and your purpose on your most powerful platform. You are sharing your core message with the people most ready to receive it. 

You might be wondering, How do I know what my most powerful platform is? Where can I show up to make the most impact? What do I need to be sharing there?

Objection: I don’t have the money to invest in marketing.

Exercise: Take the number of hours per day you are spending on marketing or lead generation, and divide that by the amount of money your marketing efforts are making you. How much of that time is actually converting into dollar bills?

The reality is that even if you aren’t spending money on marketing and lead generation, you are spending your time, blood, sweat, and tears—your valuable energy. And that adds up! 

Plus, all that time spent on lead generation is time you aren’t spending nurturing your paying clients. That’s costing you more money! It’s more cost-effective to retain clients (or have your clients return) than to acquire a new one. 

This is where the client experience piece comes in. Sure, there needs to be some investment and effort into building new relationships to have new people come through the door. But it’s also very important to focus on and nurture your paying clients.

You can say, “I don’t have the money,” but how long do you want to be saying that? Is that going to be your money story for the rest of your life?
